Saturday's Breeders' Cup Picks

Marathon
I have two major complaints about this race. This race merits the same $1 mill purse that are paid in other BC races (why did they decide to pay $1 mill in purses for two juvenile turf races and go cheap on this one? because this is the Breeders' Cup and breeders prefer 2yo races to tests of stamina). This race should also be contested at a true marathon distance. 12 furlongs is a middle distance race in many parts of the world. Let's run this race at 2 miles in the future. As far as picks I'll take equal parts 7 Big Booster (9-2) and 6 Zappa (5-2). Both can run all day.

Who will I root for?
6 Zappa is from the once powerful but no struggling Teddy sire line.

Turf Spint
13 Get Funky (9-2) is a horse for the course - he is two of three down the hill.

Who will I root for?
1 Heros Reward is a hard knocking Maryland bred.

Dirt Mile
1 Lewis Michael (5-1) loves the synthetics (or at least the poly) and is extremely versatile. 10 Rebellion (15-1)spent the summer away from Graham Motion's base in Fair Hill, MD to compete on the synthetics in California. He looks to be a true miler but might get hung out wide.

Who will I root for?
We have three horses entered by Tiznow. Full brothers 3 Slew's Tizzy and 9 Slew's Tiznow plus favorite 8 Well Armed (who I think is better suited for 10 furlongs)

Turf Mile
4 Goldikova (3-1) has rattled off consecutive Group I wins in open company and finish 2nd to superfilly Zarkava despite a poor break. 5 Daytona (6-1) is a forgotten horse here. He took alot of money earlier this year and rewarded his backers going three of six. He like to win and needs the lead.

Who will I root for?
5 Daytona is from the almost dead Herod sire line.

Juvenile
Can't find a horse to back in the race. I think 11 Midshipman (5-1) is the most likely winner and I can't find a price horse that I think will beat him.

Who will I root for?
8 Street Hero is trained and owned by Myung Kwon Cho.

Juvenile Turf
5 Relatively Ready (12-1) is my stab in wide open race. More Than Ready throws good early maturing turf runners.

Who will I root for?
10 Skipadate is from the Teddy sire line and is by superhorse (but lousy sire) Skip Away.

Sprint
2 Street Boss (3-1) is the most likely winner and offers some value at the morning line. I couldn't get excited about any of the longshots.

Who will I root for?
4 Midnight Lute was so impressive last year over the slop at Monmouth. I expected him to be a HOY contender this year but he has been on the sidelines with his only start being too bad to believe. 7 In Summation (by Put It Back) is from the Matchem sire line. 5 First Defence is out of crack filly sprinter Honest Lady (who is out of the extraordinary mare Toussaud).

Turf
The Americans are weak here. A Euro sweep? I'm backing 4 Soldier of Fortune (7-2) and 9 Conduit (6-1).

Who will I root for?
How can you not pull for 9yo 1 Better Talk Now?

Classic
I've been thinking of a way to try to beat 9 Curlin. Curlin is morning line 7-5 and I expect him to be 3-5 but I saw he trading at 5-2 on Betfair. Go figure. I'll take 1 Go Between (8-1) and 3 Tiago (15-1). Both like the synthetics and have the stamina to get 10f.

Who will I root for?
9 Curlin is the best horse the world. 11 Colonel John is by Tiznow.
