Four weeks to the Derby

Last weeks was all wrong. Big Brown ran big and Communicated didn't run a step. I lost my shirt. This week I did alot of watching (and some betting of course).

- I don't think we saw our Derby winner from the trio of preps (Wood, Illinois Derby, SA Derby). In the Wood, the locals were off the board - every year it is probably best to ignore the Gotham, the Whirlaway, etc. Tale of Ekati ran down a spent War Pass in a crawl down the stretch.  Neither appear to be a 10 furlong horses. There were no quality horses at Hawthorne - winner Recapture the Glory couldn't get through an N1x field at FG last time out despite getting loose on the lead. As for Santa Anita, the synthetic makes it a big question mark. I'd love see Tiznow and the Matchem sire line get a Derby winner (Colonel John), but I'll be betting against it.

- I bet $20 on Adriano in the Future Pool. I'll get $786 back if he wins. Probably an underlay given his connections are not pointing to the Derby, but if he were to run I think he'd have a great shot. A. P. Indy screams 10 furlongs on the dirt and I love the way Adriano has progressed despite his non-effort in the Fountain of Youth (from the 12-hole).

- I had four ADWs open on my computer and made bets through all of them. Xpressbet had a bet $100 and get $100 credit offer going so I bet $100. I'll get my $100 credit, bet that and then not use my Xpressbet account again until I get another offer (yesterday was my first bet through them since the Derby). I used Premier Turf Club for Hawthorne and Keeneland, Twinspires for Oaklawn, and Youbet for Aqueduct.

- Keeneland is a mystery to me. Country Star 5th and Proud Spell 3rd in the Ashland? Kodiak Cowboy off the board in the Lafayette?

- Invites to my Derby party (now 2nd annual) go out this week. The Derby party forces me to be social as opposed to handicapping all afternoon and anxiously waiting for the big race. Now I get my bets in early and instead of watching the tote right up until post time, I eat, drink and make merry.

- Four weeks until the Derby, three weeks until classes end. Things are looking up.
