Woodbine Entertainment Group shuts out Premier Turf Club
Woodbine Entertainment Group has shut off Premier Turf Club from access to their tracks. This is unfortunate for me since WEG controls the import of Australian racing. PTC was rebating 7% on trifectas and pick 4s and 3% on exactas for Australian races. Since I bet more money on Australian races last year than all other tracks combined, PTC was going to change my life. Now it is back to betting with Youbet.com which offers 13 Advantage points per straight wager dollar and 22 points per exotic dollar. This is roughly equivalent to a rebate of 3.25% and 5.5% respectively. The rebate, however, comes in the form of merchandise. Apparently WEG will no longer control the Australia signal in 2008 so hopefully I can play these late night races next year on PTC.
The PTC-WEG battle is fascinating and shocking. PTC is an ADW run by horseplayers for horseplayers. They are based in North Dakota and are the little guy trying to make it in a competitive marketplace (the industry tries to portray ADWs as making money hand over fist at the expense of the racetracks but that is all bullshit). PTC embraces rebating (or as we economists like to call it - 2nd degree price discrimination) and their offerings are limited (no major tracks). WEG runs Woodbine and Mohawk racetracks and controls advanced deposit wagering in Canada. The controversy between the two entities arose when a Canadian resident was able to open an account with PTC and wager a $1 (the courtesy dollar credited upon opening a PTC account). WEG explicitly prohibited PTC (or any other US-based ADW) from allowing Canadians to enroll and wager. The signals (including the Australian races) were cut off to PTC on August 10th. PTC officials admit the mistake but believe they were set up.

Pretty clear that WEG sucks. Just read some info on WEG's common pools.
From US Common Pool Wagering FAQ
Why might payoffs on some pools differ from that of the host?
Since some U.S. tracks have extraordinarily low takeout rates on some pools (e.g. Triactors, Superfectas) that do not accommodate the high mandatory deductions in Canada, WEG will use a minimum of 25% for the total takeout on these pools. This is a very common rate that is used by other U.S. tracks.
AND THOSE BASTARDS HAVE SLOT MACHINES! Are there any tracks that have slots that give a damn about the horseplayer? WEG wants it all. With an ADW monopoly and slot machines, they pretty much have it.
This is why our friends to the north don't get to take advantage of Laurel's low takeout experiment and Ellis Park's 4% Pick 4s.
