Anamato

Australian runner Anamato ran a credible third in the American Oaks at 7/2. She was  perfectly placed into the stretch but lacked the kick to close in on Panty Raid who got the first jump on the pace setters.

Trainer David Hayes (from RacingandSports.com.au)
I think she showed everyone our horses can be competitive here and hopefully if I have another good one I'll come back. She was the first foreigner home. I thought coming to the 600 metres she was the winner, but just on the home turn she laid out instead of laying in. She took the first third of the straight to find her stride.

Anamato is the second stringer in Hayes's barn to probable Australian Horse of the Year Miss Finland (I believe the latter would have won this race by open lengths). Hayes indicates he'll be back in the future for a try on American soil. According to the article the last Aussie horse to win in North America was the immortal Phar Lap in the 1932 Agua Caliente Handicap.

I bet Australian racing religiously so perhaps out of loyalty I backed Anamato enthusiastically. I was thrilled to see her at morning line odds of 8/1 and then disappointed to find out that in the CashCall Mile-American Oaks double will pays she was favorite. 7/2 was a square price especially given all the questions surrounding her shipping.

Anamato flew from Australia to Los Angeles on June 17 and did not eat for the first 10 days, leaving Hayes and Rodd with an uphill battle to have her set for the race. "She did have that ten days when I couldn't really work her because she wasn't eating," Hayes said. "So she was presented a little bit lighter than what I would have liked."
