Lady's Secret's sons running at CD
Lady's Secret, 1986 Horse of the Year and 11-time Grade I winner, has two sons entered in the 10th race at Churchill Downs tomorrow. Cool Valley Cowboy (a 4yo colt by General Meeting) and Secret Stranger (a 5yo gelding by Skip Away) may run in a $30,000 Maiden Claiming race at a mile on the dirt. Secret Stranger is on the also eligible list and is entered in the 1st race at Churchill Downs on Thursday (Mile Md Clm 40000). Both horses were bred and are trained by John Glenney. Cool Valley Cowboy has run seven times and is coming off an eight month layoff. He finished fourth as favorite in his debut against other 2yos on the turf at Del Mar in '05 but since then has not been competitive. This will be the first time he runs for a tag. Secret Stranger ran three times as a 2yo in '04 and then was shelved for three years before reappearing at CD on June 20th, finishing last of nine horses in a 6f Md Clm 50000.
Despite winning 25 of 45 lifetime, twice sweeping Belmont's fall series for mares (Maskette, Ruffian, and Beldame), and beating the boys in the '86 Whitney, the great grey mare only produced 4 winners in 10 foals. Her unraced son Excellent Secret (by Mr. Prospector) is a sire in Texas who stands for peanuts. Oddly enough Curlin has a half brother and half sister by Excellent Secret. This can be explained by Curlin's weak female family (Fares Farm bred Curlin's dam Sherriff's Deputy to Smart Strike when his stud fee was at its lowest) and the Fares family attachment to Lady's Secret - they purchased her as a broodmare in 1989 for $3.8 million.
Epilogue: Cool Valley Cowboy finished 9th of 10 horses and Secret Stranger finished 6th of 7 horses.
