"Triple Crown" hopeful stymied by conditions
Tacit Agreement, one of the top stayers in the US (a tough category to evaluate because there are so few races), will be denied his shot at Calder's faux Triple Crown. He won the 10f My Old Kentucky Home on May 5th by 10 1/2 lengths and followed up two weeks later with a 15 length score in the 9.5f Maryland My Maryland. He would have been an overwhelming favorite to crush the south Florida locals in the 12f New York New York. Unfortunately for him and the fans who follow Calder's taste of the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont, the final leg of the series is restricted to horses that have run for a $25,000 tag in the last two year or are N2X (the first two legs were open). Instead, of completing the sweep and becoming a local legend, Tacit Agreement will run in the Mataji over 11f on the turf, a surface over which he is 0 for 6 lifetime. On the dirt Tacit Agreement is 6 of 13 lifetime including a 7 length victory in last year's off the turf 2 mile Bob Umphrey Marathon. Let's hope they ship him north to compete against the stayers on the NY circuit … and hope NYRA cards some more marathons (they have already carded two overnight stakes for stayers - the Pleasant Colony and the Wagon Limit) -- Belmont Park is a 12 furlong oval so let's see some two turn races.
