Sometimes it is better to be lucky

I bet the Ohio Derby on a whim on Saturday and had to do it through my Brisbet account (Thistledown is a Magna track). I intended to bet Starbase to win figuring I'd get a nice price and he might get and easy lead and prove resolute in the stretch. I further noticed that heavy favorite Cowtown Cat was lightly bet in the show pool relative to his odds (only about 28% of the show pool was on Cowtown versus more than half of the win pool). My plan was a small win bet on Starbase and big show bet on Cowtown Cat who looked much superior to these despite his last place finish in the Derby. Brisbet has an uninformative betting interface that just lists the program numbers and where you check mark the numbers that you want to bet (both Youbet and Xpressbet have pop-up wager pads with numbers and names). I had it in my head that the #5 horse was Starbase (it was actually Delightful Kiss). So I got a bet down on the five while the horses were being loaded and had keyed in a big show bet on Cowtown Cat. Despite the fact that race had not begun in my video player, my show bet was denied -- the video delay had prevented me from throwing away money. I was upset about missing out on my show wager and even further miffed when I realized that Starbase was not the #5 but the #4. However, just as I realized my error, Delightful Kiss made a huge move around the home turn, running by the whole field on his way to an easy 3 1/2 length win at 25-1. The betting mistakes I made would not have happened on Youbet (a far superior interface), but this time it all worked out.
